One of the most exciting events happening during the Art of Stripping exhibition promises to be our Academic Symposium. Hosted by East London Strippers Collective and Red Gallery, Shoreditch, this is one of the very first event of its kind in the UK, focusing solely on stripping and strip club activity.
Gathering together for one day are some of the UK's leading academics on sex work, stripping and licensing legislation. Joining them will be the members of the ELSC, the dancers themselves who deal directly with the affects of policy and legislation every day. The aim of the symposium is to compare the academic research and understanding of the industry with the lived experience of the women who choose to work in it. A key objective is to acknowledge the voices of the workers themselves.
The day will be divided into 3 plenary sessions of different topics: licensing, migration, and sexuality. Among the academics confirmed so far are Kate Hardy, lead researcher for the University of Leeds ESRC study into lapdancing, Dr. Phil Hubbard, professor of Urban Studies at University of Kent, and Billie Lister P.h.d. Senior Lecturer in Criminology at Leeds Beckett University.
This event is likely to be very popular so we recommend booking in advance. 1 third of the seats will be offered to students free of charge, subsidised by ticket sales.
