LDLDN (NTS Radio / Spacebass)
A childhood growing up in Camden Town (full of weirdos) and a music loving, open minded family set me on my journey in music. Early raving experiences were illegal parties in warehouses and railway arches in the early 90s, then onto influential London clubs like Velvet Underground and roadtrips to iconic venues like the Hacienda and Sound Factory NYC. Along the way I actively bought the music I loved - pop, house, jazz, jungle, hip hop, disco - so I’m tricky to categorise as a DJ. One of the key things is to not get too self-indulgent about the music you play to a crowd - that’s not a strong look. I get influenced by artists who put their heart into their music and really give a sh*t, whatever the genre.
I’d been playing at random parties for years, but started doing the Spacebass parties in 2006 - a group of pals who get together, have a drink and play the nice records they bought. I’ve had some brilliant guests like Floating Points and Luke Unabomber, and been asked to play alongside some amazing artists like Moodymann and Benji B. I think the Spacebass vibe appeals to people who are deep into their music and the more casual party goer alike.
My show on NTS Radio came about because Femi (Mr NTS) knew about Spacebass parties and podcasts, and I really fancied a crack at a live show where I could get random and interact a bit more with the people listening. The show generally staggers from downtempo / hip hop vibes to disco, funk, psych, soul, house, techno. There are no age limits on records – it’s not 2hrs of new stuff – but definitely records to get you moving.
NTS Radio will be playing for Love is the Message Red Market SS14
