AM Q - NIGHT PATROL BOSSANOVA QUINTET LIVE AT THE RED GALLERY 20/06/2013

  • RED GALLERY 1-3 Rivington Street London, England, EC2A 3DT United Kingdom

Exporting Bossa Nova from Manchester to Brasil seems an unlikely venture but that’s exactly the case for alto saxophonist, songwriter and composer Saleem Qureshi aka Sam Q.  How it came about is as offbeat as the concept itself but to get there we need to travel back to post-punk Thatcherite Britain and the birth of 2Tone.

In Birmingham, Sam Q is widely regarded as the 8th member of UB40 and his immersion in the music led him to take up the alto sax.  To this day he swears he’s never had an actual lesson and describes his self-taught, natural style as “sharp-edged” and drawing on everything from bebop to the spiritual dimensions of John Coltrane. During the Eighties, he tapped into the live energy of UK dance-jazz scene and formed a jazz quartet, The Cavemen. Though long extinct the combo’s Hammond driven ‘Return Of The Prodigal Son’  is featured on Acid Jazz’s recent ‘Mo’ Jazz 2’ compilation along with the more recent Bossa Nova stylings of his Nightpatrol project.

As a band leader, that initial jazz quartet recorded their debut LP, ‘How To Steal The World’ at the UB40’s DEP studios. They had a residency at band’s club in Birmingham and also played numerous London venues like the legendary Blue Note and Ronnie Scott’s. Sam composed the soundtrack for Parachute Picture’s award winning documentary Angels With Dirty Faces and then took his horn live and direct into the rave scene playing at drum‘n’ bass sessions of pioneering deejays Fabio and Grooverider. You might even have spotted his cameo in the cinematic remake of Alfie.

To celebrate his musical rebirth and the album’s release, Sam Q’s Nightpatrol is planning to touch down at the Red Gallery in the heart of Shoreditch on Thurs June 20th and turn the dancers in the house onto his own brand of Bossa along with the odd classic.
